What are the Basic Lifeguarding Prerequisites?
Age: Minimum 15 years old.
Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence:
Swim 150 yards (or 150 meters) continuously, demonstrating breath control using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination (no back/side swimming allowed).
Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
Swim an additional 50 yards (or meters).
Timed Brick Retrieve:
Starting in the water, swim 20 yards (goggles allowed), submerge to a depth of 7–10 feet, and retrieve a 10-pound object.
Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back, holding the object with both hands, within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
Exit the water without using a ladder
What are the Waterfront Lifeguarding Prerequesites?
Age: Minimum 15 years old.
Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence:
Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 350 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.)
Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
Swim 200 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.)
Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 - 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Prerequisite 3: Complete an underwater swim:
Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 – 7 feet of water.
Resurface and continue to swim another 5 yards.
What is required for Lifeguard Students?
Students are expected to purchase the ARC Lifeguard Manual.
Response Ready Aquatics will provide students with hip packs and CPR masks that are the students to keep.
What are the final tests?
There are three skills test which include:
Rotate in-conduct surveillance – rotate out:
Simulating a position switch with another lifeguard.
Timed Single-rescuer CPR Scenario
Evaluating an individuals ability to perform effective compressions and ventilations in a siingle responder situation.
Multiple Rescuer Response Scenario
Evaluating both team and group ability to respond to a swimmer in distress.
There is also a written test made of 50 multiple choice questions in which students must score an 80% or higher.
